During 1600s, the fashion in Europe was beaver hats.  That's why the fur trade in North America began shaping Canada's political destiny.

Voyageurs manned the canoes used to transport furs. These guys were tough ath- letes!  Paddling 40 strokes a minute, they travelled over 200km a day.  Portaging, each voyageur carried two 90 pound bundles.

And what did voyageurs eat, you ask? Dried peas went into each canoe leaving Montreal. Could peas peas be more Canadian than maple syrup?
